Live in Sussex with a long-term health condition ? Take up Nordic walking for free !

From April to September, a free programme of taster sessions, beginner courses and weekly instructed Nordic walks/refresher sessions in Stanmer Park, Brighton, are available for booking if you live in Sussex with a long-term health condition, i.e. you:

  1. have defined health risk factors or self-reported health problems, e.g. overweight, high blood pressure, back pain, stress, anxiety, mild to moderate depression, including if you are a carer or bereaved
  2. live with certain long-term/progressive conditions, e.g. asthma & other respiratory conditions, long COVID, ME/chronic fatigue, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, asthma, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis & fibromyalgia
  3. are recovering from medical treatment/rehabilitation, e.g. for cancer, heart disease, stroke and joint replacement & similar operations,

and you:

  1. want to give Nordic walking a try through a taster session
  2. are keen to learn to Nordic walk by doing a four session beginner course
  3. already Nordic walk but want to brush up your technique on a refresher session and then do it more regularly
  4. used to Nordic walk, haven’t done so for a while and now want to take it up again.

You can try Nordic walking out first through a taster session to help you decide whether or not you want to learn the technique OR you can simply book a place on a course straightaway.

Taster Sessions will take place from 2 to 3.30pm on Thursdays:

  • 6 April … FULLY BOOKED (7 of the 8 took part)
  • 25 May … three took part
  • 1 June … no bookings (session replaced by Course B Catch-Up Session 2, 12 July)
  • 8 June … two attended
  • 27 July … no attendees
  • 3 August … five took part.

If Summer temperatures become too uncomfortable by the middle of the day, these sessions will be brought forward.

Courses with sessions running from 2 to 3.30pm will take place on Thursdays:

  • 13, 20 & 27 April and 4 May … FULLY BOOKED (one had to withdraw just before the course started & another opted out of the final session due to some lower back ache)
  • 29 June and 6, 13 & 20 July … FULLY BOOKED (one withdrew during the course to take up aqua aerobics instead)
  • 10, 17, 24 & 31 August … FULLY BOOKED (one withdrew during the course due to ill-health).

If Summer temperatures become too uncomfortable by the middle of the day, these sessions will be brought forward.

Allocation of places
In order to allocate firm course places, participants must have a certain level of walking fitness and a clear understanding of what kind of exercise Nordic walking involves.

Walking fitness
If you can walk swinging your arms, you’ll be able to Nordic walk. However, full technique Nordic walking is similar to/more than walking at a brisk pace, i.e. to the extent that you are breathing harder, feeling warmer, perhaps starting to sweat, but still able to talk with the person at your side.

Weather
Our policy is to postpone sessions if over 30mph wind with/without rain is forecast or ice/snow is covering our tracks. Another session will then be offered to try and ensure people don’t miss out.

Equipment
Specialist Nordic walking poles are provided for free on the course. They will then be available to buy at a subsidised price.

Regular Instructed Nordic Walks
If you decide to take up Nordic walking having successfully completed a course by joining the weekly instructed Nordic walks on Wednesdays (see below), these walks will be free up until the end of September (poles included) and then, from October, they will continue to be available at the subsidised price of £8 per person.

More information
Nordic walking is learned by participating in a course led by an accredited instructor.

These courses:

  • are not the same as a GP Referral for Exercise or Exercise on Prescription Scheme
  • require warming up at the beginning of sessions and stretching at the end
  • enable participants to reach the foundation level of technique for Nordic walking on-road, off-road, on the flat and over gentle ups and downs.

Nordic walking provides aerobic exercise (for the heart & lungs) and strengthens muscles. By improving your normal walking to make it more natural combined with learning how to propel the body forward using specialist poles, Nordic walking engages more muscles throughout the body than both normal walking and walking with trekking poles. With good technique, this makes Nordic walking much better than most other forms of physical activity at exercising the whole body.

Weekly Nordic Walks from 1.30 to 3pm on Wednesdays

These will take place every Wednesday morning from 5 April to 27 September except for 10 & 17 May, 14 & 21 June and 13  September. If Summer temperatures become too uncomfortable by the middle of the day, these sessions will be brought forward. If you don’t have your own, Nordic walking poles will be available to use for free up until the end of September – just say if you need them !
